A monthly round-up of the various pop culture events happening throughout the Edmonton area.
September at the Metro
Metro Cinema at the Garneau Theatre
September means colder weather and warm drinks. Which is great because the Metro Cinema is located beside Transcend Coffee, La Poutine and several other warm places to grab fall-related food on top of their fabulous popcorn. Some of the films featured this month include the 1990 film “Teenage Mutant Turtles”, “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Castle in the Sky” by Studio Ghibli as well as the recent “Kubo and the Two Strings”.
In-Store Signing with Kyle Charles
September 7th at 4pm to 7pm
Happy Harbor Comics
Edmonton has quite a few successful comic book artists living within its borders. Happy Harbor will be celebrating the third and final arc of “Roche Limit” with its artist, Kyle Charles. Published by Image Comics and written by Michael Moreci, “Roche Limit” third volume takes place after the Black Sun’s annihilation of Earth. With only a few spots left in the remaining human city, the inhabitants fight for survival, while a few realize that world isn’t all it seems.
Fall Community Clothing Swap 2016
September 10th and September 11th
Variant Edition Comics and Culture (at its new location)
They may be shifting their location, but the heart is the same–Variant Edition will be hosting another community clothing swap. Attendees will be able to bring their clothes from all four seasons, DVDs, CDs, toys, etc and then go through what others have brought on down. Attendees won’t have to worry either about the stuff they don’t want to take home–anything leftover will be donated to an awesome charity,
Happy Harbor Comics
Three years ago, everyone’s favourite Dark Knight celebrated 75 years of publication. Despite those 75 years, he’s still looking good and one of DC’s bestselling characters. Happy Harbor will be celebrating the character’s success with an event featuring an exclusive comic, activities for all ages as well as a 15% off sale of various Batman comics and merchandise.
Nerd Nite 28
September 21st at 8pm (show)
The Needle Vinyl Tavern
$20 in advance, $25 at the door if available
Nothing is better than listening to awesome lectures while eating good food and taking sips of tantalizing drinks. Nerd Nite made the difficult decision this past summer to move form the Citadel Theatre to accommodate the ever-growing crowds to the monthly event. Some of the topics that will be covered include: polymers, body mods and confessions of an Olympic Broadcaster.
Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo

For the last few years, Edmontonians don’t have to brave the spring weather on a trip to Calgary to get the comic convention experience, thanks to the same people who run the Calgary Expo. Featuring vendors, gaming, guests and a bucket full of programming, the Expo will have something for every nerd, Artists include Jae Lee (Batman/Superman), and Pia Guerra (Y:the Last Man) with the media guest list including Stephen Amell (Arrow), Austin St. John (Power Rangers), and Christopher Sabat (Dragonball Z).
